Expert Advice - Choose the Perfect Tile

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on the three basic types of tile flooring: ceramic, porcelain, and stone.

Types of Tile

There are three main types of tile: ceramic, porcelain, and stone. Ceramic tile and porcelain tile are the most popular types, and they are among the first flooring choices for kitchens and bathrooms. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from the same materials, but porcelain is denser than ceramic. This means that porcelain is better-equipped to handle moisture, heat, and traffic, so it is actually practical for outdoor settings such as patios. You can choose from traditional tile looks, or choose something that is trendier such as subway tile or wood look tile.

Stone tile is made from real stone, so unlike ceramic and porcelain, it offers unique, one-of-a-kind looks that can add value to your home. Stone is usually treated and sealed to protect against spills, stains, and scratches and can last a long time when cared for properly. Although it may be on the higher-priced end, it adds value and style to your home.

Where Can Tile Be Installed?

An advantage of tile is its installation versatility. Tile can pretty much be installed anywhere in the home. Tile is popular in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms, but it also can be installed in living rooms and basements. Porcelain tile is even durable enough for outdoor settings such as patios and decks, and it can also handle the foot traffic you'd expect in commercial settings.

In addition, tile can be installed on walls and backsplashes, and it can be used to create custom showers and baths. For smaller areas, be sure to consider decorative tiles such as mosaic tile and glass tile. And for areas such as showers, choose a tile that is rated for moisture such as porcelain that absorbs less than 0.5% moisture.
